A referral fee is given to the imam and the remainder of the money will then be forwarded overseas to accounts controlled by Gilani. The filer is then on the hook for the fraud if it is discovered.

Two weeks ago, without any announcement, debate, discussion or inquiry from journalists charged with “speaking truth to power” President Obama issued an amendment to this EO.  The amendment removed part of Reagan’s order that kept INTERPOL from having full diplomatic immunity while operating within the United States.  In other words:  Under Reagan and right up until two weeks ago, INTERPOL was authorized to operate within the USA but they did not have full diplomatic immunity and had to adhere to certain laws set forth for investigative agencies.  Laws that prohibit authorities from violating our constitutionally protected rights.

As O'Connor notes, not a word from the left or the media.  I just wonder why these things always happen on a holiday, in the middle of the night or on weekends.  Criminals usually operate when they think no one is looking don't they?

All travelers flying into the U.S. from foreign countries will receive tightened random screening, and 100 percent of passengers from 14 terrorism-prone countries will be patted down and have their carry-ons searched, the Obama administration was notifying airlines on Sunday.

Expect the apology to the 14 targeted countries to be very, very public.

Monty Pelerin lays out three economic alternatives for feeding the gub'ment beast in the coming year.  His closing statement kinda vindicates everything us "right wing crazies" have been saying since that Marxist Obama first reared his treasonous head.

Who cares who said it better or first, our government should fear us, not the other way around.

There are only three possibilities with respect to meeting 2010 funding needs:
The Fed continues its QE beyond their planned cessation in March 2010.
The Fed raises interest rates to levels that would attract the capital necessary to fund government operations via conventional credit markets.
No Fed action is taken. That would cause the government to default on some of its obligations.
None of these alternatives is attractive. The unpalatable choices arise from prior Fed and governmental policies. To avoid recessions over the past fifty years, the government abused and then finally exhausted all reasonable options. After years of mismanagement, the government is in a quandary of its own making from which there is no escape.
All alternatives will be very painful, and none offer the possibility of a traditional recovery. No matter what alternative is chosen, the country cannot avoid a depression. At this point, "do no further harm" should guide policy.
Of the three alternatives, what is best economically is worst politically. This natural conflict between good economics and good politics is not unusual. Economically, the country would be harmed least by implementing alternative 2. From a political standpoint, alternatives 2 and 3 are probably unacceptable. Thus, it is likely that alternative 1 will be tried (again!). It is precisely the continual overuse of this alternative that has led to the current sad state.
Alternative 1 cannot work. It will not avoid a depression. Worse, it will likely result in hyperinflation. Thus, we likely end up with the worst of all worlds. With hyperinflation, money will cease to be a medium of exchange. Markets will cease to work, except on a barter basis. The middle class will be wiped out. Their savings will become worthless along with the dollar. The end will be as Mises warned so many years ago.
The possibility of losing our form of government is a real risk under any of the alternatives. So is civil unrest and strife. All are probably more likely under alternative 1 because of the corrosive effects of high inflation combined with a depression.
Beware the turn of the calendar. Things are going to get interesting, and probably very quickly.

If the Iranian deadline is not met, Mr. Mottaki said, Iran will enrich its stockpile of low-enriched uranium to 20 percent, though it was unclear if it had the technical ability to accomplish the task. At the 20 percent level, Iran could, in theory, make an extremely crude nuclear weapon. The bigger threat would be that Iran’s enrichment could quickly accelerate from there to the much higher grade of fuel typically used in modern nuclear warheads.

Oakland, Calif.-based BrightSource Energy has been pushing for more than two years for permission to erect 400,000 mirrors on the site to gather the sun's energy. It could become the first project of its kind on U.S. Bureau of Land Management property, leaving a footprint for others to follow on vast stretches of public land across the West.

The construction would come with a cost: Government scientists have concluded that more than 6 square miles of habitat for the federally threatened desert tortoise would be permanently lost. …

BrightSource President John Woolard warned in government filings released this month that heavy-handed regulation could kill the proposal. He did not mention the tortoises directly but referred to "unbounded and extreme" requirements being placed on the company.

The site has virtually unbroken sunshine most of the year, and is near transmission lines that can carry the power to consumers.

In November, federal and state biologists reviewing the plan proposed that the company catch and move the tortoises and preserve 12,000 acres elsewhere, a proposal that could cost BrightSource an estimated $25 million.

I hear turtles make tasty soup, and being very familiar with protected gopher turtles in Florida and Georgia, they don't give two shits what we are doing around them.
